If you received CavePlot 3.0 on a floppy disk, it is already ready to use with no installation needed. To run faster, and to run without the floppy disk, simply copy all the files from the CavePlot disk to your hard drive. Running CavePlot from your hard drive will also allow the original disk to be stored as a backup.
CavePlot Requirements
CavePlot 3.0 requires System version 6.05 or later, and Finder version 6.1 or later. CavePlot may appear to run with older versions of the System and Finder, but you will experience problems. Although CavePlot runs fine in Black/White mode, it does require a “Color” Macintosh.
CavePlot 3.0 runs fine with about 1 Meg of free Ram. If you run CavePlot with less than about 750k (?) of memory, you may experience problems. The exact memory requirements depend on usage.
Survey Requirements
CavePlot requires survey stations (or points) to have names. These names can be any combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, provided that there are no commas (,), invisible characters (such as a space or tab), or quote marks (“) in the name. Station names are restricted to 15 characters. CavePlot currently accepts only uppercase letters, converting lower-case characters to uppercase automatically.
To link and plot, all stations in a survey must either be connected by survey shots, or have a specified location (@ Position). Stations which are not connected or specified will be tagged as “Lost”, and will not appear on lineplots.
This version of CavePlot will allow up to 5,000 survey stations in a single file. If you need more than that, please let me know what you need. If you require less than 32,000 stations, I can accommodate your additional needs easily. Because of the way CavePlot currently handles survey data, the ability to use more stations requires more memory, even if the additional stations are not used.
Unlike some cave survey programs, CavePlot does not require survey shots to be arranged in sequential order, or even in "optimal order". If the stations can be connected, CavePlot should be able to do it.
